Come join us on Sunday, September 26, 2010, from 10 AM to 5:30 PM, for the 2010 Pagan Pride Day in Los Angeles, held at Whittier Narrows Regional Park in El Monte, in the “Meadows” section of the park off Santa Anita Ave. Map/Directions To PPD. Admission is free but parking is $6.00. In lieu of admission we ask for donations to our food drive. Food is sold on site, but picnic lunches are allowed!

Pagan Pride Day is about coming together to celebrate our faith, and also teaching the public about our practices.

This is an opportunity for us to give back to the community, for the community to learn about us, for Pagans to network and celebrate with other Pagans who they usually do not see, for Wiccans to learn about Druids, Heathens, and others (and vice versa), and for everyone to shop and be entertained. Detailed schedule is posted here. The event features:

* Rituals – Experience rituals from different paths. Everyone is welcome to attend all rituals. You do not have to be a follower of the path to attend rituals.
* Workshops – We have two workshop tents with people sharing their insights into such diverse topics as Rune Reading, Trends in Magick, Herbal Lore.
* Authors – Authors of your favorite Pagan themed books here to sign your books and answer your questions.
* Entertainment – Music, Dance to entertain and enlighten.
* Vendors – Stock up on your supplies – Herbs, Oils, Soaps, Jewelry, Clothing, Books, Crystals, and SO MUCH MORE…!
* Food – We will have a food vendor on site throughout the day.
* Children’s Activities – An area where kids can color, make stuff, listen to stories. Please note this is not a day care service. You are responsible for keeping an eye on your kids.

Visit http://www.paganpridela.org for more information

Come meet and mingle with other members of the Long Beach environmental community at the Green Long Beach! Fall kickoff mixer at 6pm Sunday, September 19 at Zephyr Vegetarian Cafe (340 E 4th St. Long Beach).

Green Long Beach! will present its plan for the next year, focusing on four initiatives generated from community feedback. The four initiatives are:

* Community-wide environmental education and outreach
* Building more community gardens and green spaces
* Encouraging and providing training for green jobs
* Organizing the 3rd annual Green Long Beach! Festival

The mixer will introduce you to other members of the community who share a vision of making Long Beach a greener city, and host public discussions, so we can collaborate throughout the year to make that vision a reality.

Green Long Beach! is a grassroots group, bringing together individuals and organizations to promote environmental awareness. Formed in 2009 after volunteers came together to plan the 1st annual Green Long Beach! Festival, Green Long Beach! has continued to grow. In May, the second festival, even larger than the first, was held.

We are part of Catalyst Community, a nonprofit organization in Long Beach empowering communities to connect around shared interests and make an affect in their neighborhoods.

The mixer will host guest speakers, open discussions, and the opportunity to meet with other eco-friendly residents in the city. There is no charge to attend or participate, but donations are appreciated. Light refreshments will be provided. Zephyr will be open for dining. For more information call (562) 786-3874, email us at greenlb@gocatalyst.org, or visit our facebook page.

High school students at Colegio New City School in Long Beach were deeply affected by the Academy Award-winning documentary “The Cove” — a compelling look at the 23,000 dolphins slaughtered every year in a cove in Japan.

So when their humanities teacher, Don Grose, asked the students to create sculptures using recycled materials, they set out to create a plastic dolphin sculpture, shown swimming through a sea of plastic, made entirely from 23,000 discarded water bottles.

“We talked about making art that has a message behind it,” Grose says. “We decided to make an installation that would raise people’s awareness not just about the slaughter of dolphins in Japan, but how all of these plastic water bottles are destroying coastal waters and polluting oceans.”

The students collected and used nearly 2,000 bottles and were pledged 22,000 more from the Cal State Long Beach Recycling Center.

The 23,000 Project will be unveiled at a Phantom Galleries space at 360 E. 3rd St., Long Beach, during the Green Long Beach Festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 10 pm. Saturday. The artists’ reception will be Friday, 3 to 5 p.m. For more information on the 23,000 Project, click here.
